State to shut Howard Beach center for retarded

The Howard Beach branch of the Bernard Fineson Developmental Center, home to more than 100 people with mental retardation and other types of developmental disorders, will close due to consolidation plans by the state agency that funds and operates the center.

The move has drawn sharp criticism from members of the community who say the developmental center has become an integral part of the South Ozone Park-Howard Beach community.
