Obituary: Robert J. Berke, 76

Robert J. Berke, a resident of Manor Road in Douglaston for more than 30 years, died Jan. 6 at North Shore University Hospital after suffering a severe cerebral hemorrhage. He was 79.

Berke had retired several years ago as executive director of the National Association of Fleet Administrators, a post he had held for over 20 years.

Born in Brooklyn, he was raised in Sunnyside and was a member of the first Queens College graduating class in 1941. A decorated World War II veteran, he served with Army Intelligence in the European Theatre of Operations and participated in the North African and Italian campaigns. For several years, Berke served on School Board 26, Community Board 11 and as head deacon of the Congregational Church of Flushing.

An active member of the Douglaston Civic Association, he edited the group
