Creedmoor Civic marks 75 years of activism

By Adam Kramer

The Creedmoor Civic Association celebrated its 75th anniversary Saturday afternoon with a bash at the Queens Farm Museum.

The civic was founded as a voluntary association in 1927 and was named after the housing subdivision — the Creedmoor Homes — where it was located. Its boundaries stretch from Moline Street to the west, 88th Avenue to the north, the Cross Island Parkway service road to the east and Braddock Avenue to the south.

The association is small compared to many other civics in Queens, encompassing 700 homes and about 1,000 families. Even so, the Creedmoor Civic Association has always had strong representation at the Eastern Queens Civic Council and the Federation of Civic Councils of the Borough of Queens.

In addition to being instrumental in the construction of Martian Van Buren High School and PS 18, the civic has played a major role in screening and electing candidates to School Board 29, fought for zoning to protect its single-family homes and been an advocate for environmental safety.
