Queensborough Chorus presents musical mosaic

Selections will demonstrate transcendent genres of music with a diverse program with works by J.S. Bach and Bobby McFerrin, along with traditional songs of Africa and selections from Paul Simon’s “Graceland” album. Joining the 100 singers of the Queensborough Chorus are soloists, orchestra, percussion trio, electric guitar, keyboard and electric bass.

The Queensborough Chorus’s music director, Sheila Schonbrun, a faculty member of the college’s music department, chose this varied repertoire “to demonstrate continuity between different types of music and cultures.”

By featuring music from traditional to modern, the Queensborough Chorus concerts regularly celebrate cultural diversity by tapping into multi-ethnic themes and making them a mainstay of concert fare.

For this performance’s traditional Western sampling, J.S. Bach’s masterwork “Magnificat” will be performed by chorus and soloists with full orchestra. Music from Paul Simon will round out the contemporary set with percussion trio and rock band joining the chorus for transcriptions of “You Can Call Me Al,” “Homeless” and “Under African Skies.” Also included on the program are Bobby McFerrin’s “23rd Psalm,” and a special offering of traditional songs of Africa.

The performance is funded, in part, by New York State Legislative grants obtained by State Sen. Frank Padavan, with funds from the Decentralization Program and the generous support of business and individuals.

Admission is $10 per ticket, and $8 for students and seniors. For information, call the Box Office at 718-631-6311.
