MONTAUK, L.I. — A private plane crashed in a pond outside Montauk Airport early Monday morning, killing three men, the National Transportation Safety Board said.

John Wade, 44, of Long Island City, was among the victims of the deadly crash, East Hampton Town Police Chief Todd Sarris said.

The others were Stephen Lally, 44, of Staten Island and Robert Hecker, 39, of Bellmore, N.Y., who is believed to be the pilot, Sarris said.

The twin-engine PA 34-200 was en route to Republic Airport in Farmingdale, the NTSB said. The cause of the crash was under investigation.
