Man sentenced for biting girlfriend’s ear off in Feb

A South Ozone Park man who pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend and biting off a portion of her ear was sentenced last week to 11 1/2 years in prison in State Supreme Court, the Queens district attorney said.

DA Richard Brown said Judge William M. Erlbaum sentenced Felix Rondon, 32, of 150-11 122nd St. for intentionally disfiguring Jessica Mencia, 22, during an attack at the couple's home on Feb. 18, 2002. Brown said Mencia was permanently scarred from the incident.

"The defendant's savage attack caused serious physical injury to the mother of his children and resulted in severe disfigurement," he said. "The long prison sentence imposed by the court ensures just punishment for a terrible crime of depraved violence."

Rondon pleaded guilty May 27 to first-degree assault, Brown said. The DA said Rondon admitted to purposely attacking Mencia's face and body during the attack to leave permanent damage.

Brown also said Mencia had to undergo several skin grafts and reconstructive surgeries during a monthlong hospital stay following the February incident.

"Hopefully, the victim will be able to recover from her traumatic ordeal," Brown said.

Police from the 106th Precinct responded to 911 calls from neighbors shortly before 2 a.m. on the night of the incident and rushed into Rondon's home to find him lying on top of a semi-conscious Mencia in a bedroom. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan following the attack, police said at the time of the incident.

Mencia, who dated Rondon for eight years and is the mother of 4-year-old and 10-month-old daughters, was sent to Jamaica Hospital, where she underwent emergency plastic surgery.

Brown characterized the attack against Mencia as potentially fatal. Cops said at the time that there were no previous recorded incidents of domestic violence at the couple's home.
