LaGuardia presents ‘The Silly Jellyfish’ March 21

Sent on a quest by the king and queen of the dragons, the young, innocent jellyfish meets up with a menagerie that lives in the deep of the sea — a blue crab, an octopus, two manta rays, a great white shark, a blue whale and a giant sea turtle.

The professional theater troupe will tell this ancient Japanese folktale with larger-than-life puppets, music, and dance. Borrowing from the traditional Japanese Bunraku style of puppetry, the puppeters, clad in black, become mere shadows of the giant figures that they bring to life. In this world beneath the sea, there are nine-foot sea dragons and a blue whale that measures 40 feet.

Founded in 1982, the Hudson River Valley ensemble presents more than 150 performances each year at regional theaters, festivals, schools, and cultural centers throughout the eastern United States.

The Weekend Family Series production of “The Silly Jellyfish,” will be held in the college’s Mainstage Theatre at Van Dam Street and 47th Ave. The event begins at 2 p.m.

Tickets are available by calling 718-482-5151.
