The man, Frank Dimarco, 52, of 7 Roxbury Rd. in Westbury, was shot once in the head on Feb. 4 at about 10:19 p.m. at 219-11 132nd Rd.. police said. He died 36 minutes later after being rushed to Mary Immaculate Hospital in Jamaica, they said.
Dimarco was released from prison Aug. 6 after serving 12 years for burglary and attempted robbery, a spokesman for the State Division of Parole said. But Dimarco recently stopped reporting to his parole officer, the spokesman said, and on Jan. 30 a warrant was issued for his arrest.
As of Tuesday no arrests had been made in his shooting and the investigation was ongoing, police said, pointing out that checkpoints and a gridpoint search had been set up the night of the murder.
Neighbors said they heard a loud noise that night followed by a car driving away but had not seen anything.
"I heard a shot - I thought it was a firecracker," one neighbor said. She said she did not open her curtains to look outside but heard a car quickly drive away followed a couple of minutes later by what she thought was a second car.
News reports mentioned a white Volvo parked nearby that may have been Dimarco's, but the neighbor said it belonged to her family and that she did not notice any unfamiliar cars sitting on the street after the shooting.
A second neighbor wondered what Dimarco had been doing in the neighborhood. She said after police arrived she went out to look at the body.
"I didn't know him," she said.
Dimarco had been living in Westbury, L.I. since his release, and he had been known to take construction jobs, law enforcement officials said.
Dimarco had an arrest record dating back to at least 1970, the spokesman for the State Division of Parole said. He had been previously paroled three other times after being convicted and imprisoned for burglary and attempted robbery, among other crimes, the spokesman said.
"He's basically an unsuccessful career criminal," he said.
