We will be sad to see CaffÉ on the Green close its doors Jan. 31. The city terminated its contract with owner Joe Franco after an investigation by the city Department of Investigation that no one will talk about.
In June, the city comptroller said the eatery had “deficiencies so severe that the comptroller could not determine whether all gross receipts have been actually reported to the city.” Franco said the unaccounted−for monies were tips management did not know it had to report.
We do know that the CaffÉ was well−run and we will be sorry to see it go. The new owners will have tough shoes to fill.
