Jam. Hospital hires new surgeon

Jamaica Hospital is launching a special effort to help patients who suffer from arthritis pain with new equipment and diagnostic strategies and a new physician.

Dr. Sean Thompson joined the staff at the medical center, at 89-00 Van Wyck Expwy., last month as its new orthopedic surgeon and specializes in total joint replacement.

The borough’s elder population is growing and there is an increased risk of bone and joint problems, including osteoarthritis, which is arthritis of the hip, according to the doctor.

“Symptoms of osteoarthritis tend to develop slowly in the beginning but worsen over time,” Thompson said in a statement. “Once an individual reaches the point of constant pain, it’s usually a clear indication that an evaluation of the hip and joint is needed.”

The Centers for Disease Control predict that by the year 2030, 67 million adults will be diagnosed with arthritis. The disease is caused by wear and tear between muscles and bones at joints.

Thompson said there are several ways to treat the pain, including medicines, behavioral changes and joint replacement surgeries.

Jamaica Hospital recently expanded its joint replacement services and offers therapeutic injections, total knee and hip replacements, total hip resurfacing, computer navigation surgery, hip and knee arthroscopy and rehabilitation medicine.

Patients can have various diagnostic tests done and work with physicians on the best long-term care, according to Thompson.

“It is important that patients with osteoarthritis of the knee or hip obtain continuity of treatment from the time they are diagnosed to post-surgical recovery,” he said.

“Our integrated team of orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and specialized nurses work diligently to provide this kind of care.”
