We would be better without guns

I do not understand why we need to have guns so prevalent in our society. I know about the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms. I know about the Bill of Rights and when and why it was adopted.

I am not talking about whether it is legal or illegal, whether it is right or wrong, whether it is an AK-47 an AR-15, a bazooka or a .22-caliber rifle or a pistol. It just does not make sense to me.

From the beginning of their introduction, the primary purpose of a firearm is to rip through flesh and bone and kill a living creature. And please, do not give me that garbage about guns are used for target practice, skeet shooting, recreation or hunting an animal. The primary purpose is to kill.

And I am sure some of you, if you have chosen to keep reading up to this point, are thinking, “I am going to reiterate to Frank the age-old argument that guns do not kill people — people kill people.” To which I say: Please.

I buy that argument about as much as I buy the fact that food does not keep people alive — people keep people alive. Of course, people need to eat food, but the fact of the matter is food sustains us. It is a given that a person needs to ingest it.

The same way that, yes, a person needs to shoot a gun. The gun is meant to kill human beings and animals. Guns kill people — just ask my former neighbor, whose son is dead because a loaded gun dropped on the floor in their house.

So I keep asking myself in a civilized society: Does there need to be such a proliferation of firearms? Should firearms be allowed or available in our society? What would the world look like if there were no guns?

Sure there would be something else used in their place, maybe even with more power. I am not naive, I qualified as a sharpshooter with an M-16 rifle and handguns in the military, but would we not be better off without so many guns?

Would as many of our children and citizens be dying in our streets? Would perpetrators be coming into our homes at an alarming rate? Would the bad guys overtake the good guys?

I do not think so.

Frank Coffaro

Lou from Bayside says:
Another uninformed posting by a local boob! Yes , lets only let Bloomberg and the other tyrants have guns! Think he taxes and fees you now! And lets turn a blind eye to the the 2 billion rounds of hollow point bullets recently purchased by the so called Dept of Homeland security for internal , domestic use! Who do they plan on using those bullets on? Frank , you are uninformed and appear to be trying to be a poster boy for the tyrant politicians who all belong to groups like " The Council on Foreign Relations" whose main purpose is the ending of United States Sovreignty and the imposition of a "New World Order" . Oh and by the way Frank, 4500 babies are slaughtered every day via abortion! Who defends them! When that slaughter is stopped , then maybe we can go after the guns!

Kenneth Kowald from I Sit and Look Out says:
Frank: As Lou knows from another posting, my next column, scheduled to appear January 17, is titled "A 'Marksman' Discusses Guns. I hope you will have a chance to read it and perhaps comment on it. I hope Lou and others will do so, too.

Lou from Bayside says:
As firearms instructor Paul Howe wrote recently, history teaches us harsh lessons about government disarmament of citizens:
In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.
Those are 56 million deaths that fall onto the hands of people like Obama, Biden, Morgan, Bloomberg, Cuomo and anyone who calls for gun confiscation. YOU are the mass murderers who make the Sandy Hook shooting look like nothing in comparison.
It now appears Obama is going to go down in history as the U.S. President who brought us to a second civil war, where the goal of the radical left is to exterminate anyone who believes in liberty.
American are arming for war
Lock and load, friends. The darkest chapter in American history is fast approaching. Meanwhile, Americans are arming up like never before. As the Washington Free Beacon is reporting today, “Folks are grabbing just about any gun they can get their hands on…”

Beverly from Bayside says:

Good old Mr. Lou is back again with his twisted logic. He unkowingly with his example of his exception, proves the rule. What is so hard to get into one's skull that more firearms = more deaths by firearm. America is number 4 in deaths by firearms thropughout the world only behind South Africa, Columbia and Thailand. This is the embarrasing company intelectually on a par with Mr. Lou.

When compared with advanced industrial countries such as England, Germany, Japan and a host of others we incur almost 100 times more deaths yearly by firearms. those are facts, not exceptions

Lou from Bayside says:
Twisted logic from "Beverly" who would have been a redcoat conspirator in 1776. Jefferson agreed that Americans must keep in bear arms as a last defense against tyrants! Have you ever seen bigger tyrants than the effeminate LITTLE Mayor Bloomberg or Obama? Beverly uninformed yentas like yourself should really refrain from taking part in such discussions. You are ignorant and a total disgrace!

Joe A from Flushing says:
I agree with you frank, in the name of all the bad guys out there. Preventing responsible citizens from having guns will insure that criminals and crazies are perfectly safe when they break into your home to rape and kill your family or charge into a public place for the sole purpose of killing innocent people or burst into a local class room and mow down our children. The bad guys will always have access to guns, but just at a slightly higher cost. They will be given even more confidence to do their deeds knowing that only the police have guns when they eventually arrive, usually well after the fact, to make a report. Yes Frank, lets give the bad guys a free reign on society and insure their well being and safety.

Joanna Livingstone from Little Neck says:
Frank Coffaro, take heart. Read your letter and immediately realized that it was far too intelligent, and introspective not to earn the ire of the lous & Joes of the world......or at least Queens, and there they are. Their "Get'm befoor dey getchoo" mentality is a sad reflection on how little with some, our society has morally progressed......indeed have digressed. Cowardice comes in many forms. These deluded self anointed avengers and guardians of the “weak" are no less cowards than those aggressors they so bravely claim to shoot. They are both cut from the same cloth and our country would be far better off without either.

Rosario DiMarco from Whitestone says:
This is a sad commentary there are a thousand ways
to kill a person guns are just a add on we really don't
need you wonder who's in possession of most of
them the criminals or the law biding people.

You sound like a crazy cat lady that has nt had any fun in a very long time. When the deviant Bloomberg or the Kenyan with the fake Social security number is herding you onto a cattle car ill be thinking about how "morally progressed " you are! ****The right of americans to keep and bear arms SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED!****

That Guy from cause i can says:
I have to agree with Lou. This is a horrible event that could have been stopped by guns. If we think law inforsment could help then explain all crimes like kidnapping and burlgery . I am a kid and i will admit it makes scene!
