Teamsters endorse Liu, Troopers back Avella

By Alex Robinson

John Liu and state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) each racked up a union endorsement in their primary battle Monday.

The Teamsters Joint Council 16, representing 120,000 workers citywide, announced its support for the former city comptroller.

“John Liu is a true friend of New York workers, who has time and again put himself on the line to be their voice in government,” said Teamsters Joint Council 16 President George Miranda. “Whether it’s working to build and preserve affordable housing, create and protect good jobs, or provide quality education to all children, John Liu has never backed down from fighting for the issues that truly matter to our members.”

The New York State Troopers PBA, which has 6,000 members, threw its weight behind Avella.

“Sen. Avella has always been on the front lines – fighting to ensure that our law enforcement community has the resources they need to protect New Yorkers each and every day,” said the union’s second vice president, Dan Sisko.
