Truck collision with LIRR bridge causes train delays

By Mark Hallum

Trains leaving Penn Station were cancelled for up to an hour Tuesday after a truck collided with a Long Island Road bridge west of Woodside at about 6:30 p.m., according to MTA LIRR social media pages.

The truck hit the bridge at 59th Street and 39th Avenue, according to Breaking News Network.

Customers heading westbound also experienced delays along the Port Washington Branch and the Jamaica line, which was shut down with passengers diverted to the E train at Sutphin Boulevard-Archer Avenue, Union Turnpike and 71st Avenue stops. The MTA was cross-honoring fares for LIRR passengers at these points, MTA LIRR said.

Delays for the Port Washington Branch were announced at approximately 6:29 p.m. for 14 minutes. Passengers on trains going west experienced a standstill for up to a half hour.

Regular eastbound train traffic did not resume until 8:01 p.m., but the public was advised to expect residual delays following the accident.
