Letitia James Warns Consumers About Classified Ads Toll numbers may be a direct line to trouble. Classified ads are intended to help people by facilitating communication and advertising available services; however, some of the hotlines & service numbers in classifieds actually hurt the people who rely on them by cheating them of their hard-earned dollars. “Most newspapers print a disclaimer in their classified ad section to warn readers about numbers that are a direct line to trouble. Any number starting with 900, 540, 595 or 871 charges a fee beyond a local call. In some instances, ads initially advertise calls to a local number, but then direct callers to a second number starting with one of the paid exchanges. “Consumers must also question the legitimacy of vague classifieds because they too could be a scam. Before responding to an ad, consumers should verify the source of all information & always be wary about sending money or signing a contract with an unknown party.” Office of the Public Advocate

Julian W. Caplan passed away September 13, 2017 at the age of 94 in West Orange, NJ.

In 1948 Julian met Kathryn Mary McInnes (Kit), the love of his life. They celebrated 64 years of marriage until Kit’s death in 2012. Julian and Kit are survived by four children: Nancy (and Gerrald Hochman, Basking Ridge, NJ); Jon (and Michele) Caplan (NYC); Patty Dow (and Tom Vultee, West Orange, NJ); and Stuart (and Barbara) Caplan (Larchmont, NY) and six grandchildren: David, Daniel, Courtney, Ffej, Tristan and Sarina, and six great grandchildren. Julian and Kit raised their family in Douglaston, New York before moving to Manhattan in 1980 and later to Montclair, NJ.

Julian was a student of the works of Mark Twain and had a 25-year run bringing Twain to life for audiences throughout the Tri-State area. A retired lawyer, corporate executive, and professor, he was born in Houston, Texas (April 3, 1923) where he appeared in school plays with Ann Miller/Gale Storm. In addition to attending Rice and Columbia Universities and the Washington College of Law (JD ‘54), Julian studied acting with Stella Adler at the Dramatic Workshop (NYC), where classmates included Marlon Brando and Maureen Stapleton. Following his business career, Julian responded to a yearning to “excite the laughter of God’s creatures” through bringing Mark Twain to life.

Julian was a pillar and choir member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair and participated in congregational and denominational programs for many years. Julian was a lifelong activist for social justice and the environment.

Julian loved the St Louis Cardinals, golf and classical music. He made friends everywhere he went. He ate like a teenager, with equal dedication to exercise until the end.

Julian loved his family who will carry on his legacy. Julian, Dad, Grandpa, friend, touched and will be missed by many.

Memorial service: October 29 at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair, 67 Church Street, Montclair, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to: Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (donate.uusc.org/checkout/donation?eid=61970), and Green Hill, home to Kit and Julian since 2008 (www.green-hill.com/donate).
