Queens is lacking updated theater venues

My wish list for Queens this holiday season has only one item – new theater venues! Regular readers of this column know that I frequently lament the lack of state-of-the-art locales to house our local community theaters. Mainly confined to churches and other make-do spaces, these companies do their best with minimal budgets and resources in this borough of at least 2.3 million inhabitants, a number larger than most cities. Plenty of theater options coming up in Queens

This weekend you might be wondering what it’s like to run in a marathon, or perhaps you’re debating whether to finish off the last of the Halloween goodies, or maybe, like me, you’re not sure if time really exists as we change the clocks back from daylight to standard. However, let me suggest that you escape these dilemmas by taking in a local show or two. Comment

Tune in to these upcoming theatre productions in Queens

Now that I’m back at sea level after nearly two weeks in the state of New Mexico, it’s time to resume my comments and musings on the state of our local theater. Comment

Local theater deserves to spread wings

Some interesting items from my inbox

Once in a while, something interesting shows up in my email inbox. It’s often hard to spot, since it’s surrounded by offers to reduce belly fat, regrow hair, lower blood pressure, increase income, improve one’s sex life — among many other dubious offers. But this one caught my attention. Comment

A busy year of watching, if not writing

I haven’t written many columns this year, in case you hadn’t noticed, but I have seen a lot of theater — 14 shows to date, usually in the company of my first wife, the former Lois Abramowitz. She is also my only wife, as we are about to celebrate our 54th anniversary on June 16 — which is also Bloomsday for you James Joyce readers. Comment

Live theater is most lifelike entertainment

If you’re a regular reader of this column, as well you should be, then you’re probably a person who enjoys and values theater. For me there’s nothing like it, introduced to the stage by my parents at an early age — “Finian’s Rainbow” and “Brigadoon” come to mind back in the ‘40s. Comment

In the age of hyperbole, make theater heard

It’s official. The age of hype, exaggeration, spin and scam is here. Everything is now the best, the biggest and the most tremendous. We local theater people struggle to put on our shows and get an audience, but we’re often overwhelmed by overstatement and overkill. Comment
