Friedrich defends his political role

In a Nov. 10-16 letter to me, Barbara Leonardi asked if my letter to the editor (“E-mail disguised as birthday celebration,” Oct. 20-26), wherein I called for “truth in advertising” by elected officials who send out fund-raising letters masquerading as birthday invitations was “genuine or just another one of your tries at a political position.” In the same paper, Diane Stromfeld characterizes my letter as a “complaint from the perennial candidate, who is a perennial loser.” Comment

City Councilman Dan Halloran (R-Whitestone) was caught on video in Auburndale last month giving an expletive-laced tongue lashing to a car shop, but instead of letting the incident fade quietly into the past, he has worn it as a badge of honor at subsequent public appearances. Comments (1)
The U.S. House of Representatives Ethics Committee said it will not look into a nearly $60,000 home equity loan received in 2010 by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-Jamaica) after the Office of Congressional Ethics determined there was no reason to believe the congressman violated House rules. Comment

Protester crashes Turner inauguration

Despite a disruption from a small protest, U.S. Rep. Bob Turner (R-Kew Gardens) was inaugurated Sunday at Metropolitan High School in Forest Hills before an enthusiastic crowd. The first Republican congressman to represent the district since 1923 received support from Republicans and Democrats at the ceremony. Comment
Nearly 48 hours after he sealed his future in City Hall, Councilman Ruben Wills (D-Jamaica) ended the 15-year-old misdemeanor case against him at Manhattan Criminal Court last Thursday by admitting to his past wrong doings, the Manhattan district attorney’s office said. Comment
