A 20 percent jump in grand larcenies in 1999 bucked the overall downward trend in crime for the 114th Precinct, covering Astoria and Long Island City.
According to a police spokesman, Cadet John Buthorn, reported incidents of grand larcenies rose to 939 in 1999 from 783 a year earlier and homicides increased to nine from eight in 1998.
