City Councilman Peter Koo (R-Flushing) honored four members of the African-American community last week in celebration of Black History Month.

Koo presented Council Proclamations Friday afternoon to the Rev. Calvin Leander Gibson, Nicole Labades, Craig Kinsey Sr. and the Rev. Richard McEachern.

“I am honored to acknowledge the contributions of outstanding members of our community in observance of Black History Month,” Koo said in a statement. “[The honorees] are all upstanding citizens of New York and great assets to our community. They are civic-minded individuals who give with their hearts and exhibit selfless dedication to the people they serve.”

Gibson is pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Flushing, Labades is president of the Latimer Gardens Community Center Advisory Board and recording secretary of the Latimer Gardens Tenant Association, Kinsey is a local community activist for the Bland Houses in Flushing and McEachern is pastor at Macedonia A.M.E. Church in Flushing.

“Black History Month provides us with a special opportunity to reflect upon the countless African Americans whose legacies have woven the rich quilt of our great nation,” Koo said. “Let us take care and pride to remember the numerous sacrifices they made in the name of freedom, justice and equality for all Americans .... We recognize that this road was paved for them by other remarkable individuals who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that others may enjoy the freedoms that endure today. The individuals here today are exemplary leaders and a shining example of extraordinary citizens.”
