More than 240 apartments in a Flushing housing complex have been left without gas since Thursday evening because of a leaking pipe, a Con Edison spokesman said.
The utility company turned off the gas service to 249 units in Pomonok Houses, at 67-10 Parsons Blvd., around 10 p.m. Thursday after residents on the first floor complained about a gas odor and alerted the Fire Department.
“We are waiting for the New York City Housing Authority to make repairs,” the Con Edison spokesman said. “The leak is on customer piping, so we’re waiting for them to make repairs before we can introduce gas again.”
A NYCHA spokeswoman said heat and hot water services were not affected by the disruption, only cooking gas.
“NYCHA staff has been on site since day one working to restore service,” she said in a statement. “NYCHA staff notified residents and distributed hot plates. While we cannot estimate when gas will be restored at this point, NYCHA staff are working to restore service as soon as possible. We will keep residents informed.”
The housing authority will need to hire a plumber to make the necessary repairs before tenants will get gas again, the Con Edison spokesman said.
