AUBURNDALE — A 61-year-old man died last week after being struck by a vehicle in Auburndale that fled the scene, the NYPD said.
The man, identified as Peter Hatzikalfas, was crossing 46th Avenue near Utopia Parkway at 11:39 p.m. when an unknown vehicle struck him, according to the police. The driver left the scene, police said.
The man was found lying unconscious and unresponsive on the roadway with severe head trauma, according to the NYPD’s Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad. He was taken to Flushing Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Eyewitness accounts and possible video obtained show that Hatzikalfas was not in the crosswalk but crossing mid-block just east of the Utopia Parkway, a police spokeswoman said.
