City Councilman Peter Koo (D-Flushing) helped announce the opening of the first Flushing Greenmarket Wednesday The Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce partnered with GrowNYC to bring locally grown products that will emphasize nutritious fruits and vegetables. The fruits and vegetables sold will all be grown or produced within 250 miles of New York City.

The Greenmarket will be located on the South-West corner of Maple Avenue and Kissena Boulevard just two blocks away from the Flushing branch of the Queens Library. The new Greenmarket will be open every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Nov. 26

John Choe, executive director of the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce, has big expectations for the Greenmarket in Flushing,

“We envision a weekly farmer’s market that provides our community with a rich selection of locally sourced and nutritious food options,” he said “Our ultimate goal is to increase health and wellness in our community by expanding access to fresh fruits and vegetables as well as providing opportunities to learn about better nutrition and environmental practices.”

Greenmarkets are not new to New York City, which has multiple locations in the five boroughs with dozens of them just in Queens.

Cody Herrmann, project coordinator at the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce, is pleased to see a successful program come to a neighborhood like Flushing.

“We are excited to have a Greenmarket in Flushing. GrowNYC’s markets serve as ‘sustainabi­lity hubs’ all over the city,” he said “It is great to know our neighborhood will now have a centralized resource and information center for those looking to lower their environmental impact.”

Sure what about non Asians that are elderly and don't drive. No benefits in east Flushing for tax paying citizens???

can't fool the people from queens says:
Don't be fooled by this 'farmer's market' krap. Much of the stuff is imported from china where the US gets much of its produce. For example, look on the bottom of any container of fake 'organic' nuts and you'll see it's a product of china. Garlic in particular comes largely from china.
