Mudbound — Surpassing the promise of her debut feature Pariah, director Dee Rees has made one of the year’s most impressive and ambitious dramas, adapting Hillary Jordan’s post–World War II novel about two families — one black, one white — who confront different levels of racism in WWII–era Mississippi.
