The World Journalism Preparatory School, located at 34-65 192 St. in Flushing, has been ranked as one of the Top 100 Best Schools nationwide for Financial Literacy Education, according to Working In Support of Education, a national nonprofit organization.
The Financial Literacy Certification Program is implemented by W!SE to develop the financial knowledge of students while also striving to enhance careers and college readiness.
“I am currently in AP macroeconomics, and sometime during the beginning of the school year we started prepping for the Financial Literacy exam,” senior Ivana Pitino said. “This course is very interesting and helpful because I am able to gain knowledge on the world of finance and apply it to my everyday life outside of school.”
Kenneth Mengani, an AP macroeconmics and history teacher at World Journalism, said every year he instructs seniors on the fundamentals and concepts of the Financial Literacy Exam. Students who pass the exam with a score of 65 or higher are granted the certification as economically literate.
“I think that it’s great that passing seniors will get recognized certification as proof of our literacy,” senior Robyn Landolfi said. “Through the knowledge from the Financial Literacy course, we can put our skills to the test while also learning about essential life finances.”
With a composite score of 97, WJPS senior Kevin Cosgrove earned one of the highest recorded scores in the nation. In April 2018, Mengani and Cosgrove attended the annual W!SE awards ceremony held in Manhattan.
“I enjoyed the Financial Literacy Certification course because I was able to learn about mortgage payments, different types of loans, the difference between assets and liabilities and so much more,” Cosgrove said. “I feel like this course prepares students for the real world, and helps us learn about the financial system as a whole.”
The Financial Literacy course is administered to seniors with the aim of strengthening their financial background and life skills in the long run.
