International Yoga Day has become something of a big deal in a short time. Started just four years ago by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the celebration of the ancient Indian art of exercise and relaxation has spread to more than a dozen countries, including this event in Flushing.

The symbol for the Hindu word, “Om,” is everywhere on International Yopga Day. It refers to the both the sound made by yoga participants as they exercise as well as a person’s inner self or soul.

Aboard their yoga mats, more than 100 people participated in a series of yoga workshops in the weddding hall at the Hindu Temple Society of North American on Bowne Street.

It may have started in India, but the gospel of yoga has spread around world in recent years. Many of those at the Hindu Temple last weekend were neigborhood residents of Chinese descent.

In yoga, the fingertips are closed in a “mudra,” meaning seal in Sanskrit. Hindus believe the gesture will close the circuit of energy that flows through the body and brain during meditation.

International Yoga Day, an ambitious plan from the prime minister of India to promote yoga around the world, is now in its fourth year. At the Hindu Temple Society in Flushing, the wedding hall was converted into a mass yoga room for more than 100 people, ranging from beginners to experts.
