Islanders’ new arena will lead to more traffic on Cross Island Parkway

I read with dismay that an 18,000-seat hockey and concert arena will be built at Belmont Park for the New York Islanders.

While this may benefit some people, it will create horrendous traffic on the overburdened Cross Island Parkway.

Beginning daily at 2:30 p.m., there is bumper-to-bumper traffic from the Whitestone and Throgs Neck bridges, plus terrible backups near the entrance to the Long Island Expressway.

Now we will have to deal with thousands of people going to and from this arena.

While there will be some improvements from the Long Island Rail Road, what is the city planning to do to alleviate increased traffic on the Cross Island Parkway?

New York’s motto seems to be “build, build, build,” without much thought for the problems it causes.

Toomuch from Queens says:
What was the point to them fixing up Nassau Colosseum if the islanders aren't going to move back there? I think it's a terrible idea to build an arena on Belmont park. Also, the cross island already can't support the traffic it has on it now. Too congested.

JJK from Bayside says:
As Toomuch pointed out, I can not understand the logic of not rebuilding the Colosseum to accommodate the Islanders. No sense at all. Now, five years later its this mess. Bunch of morons!

agree from Queens says:
I agree with the other posters. There is no reason to build the Islanders a new arena. Once they prove they can fill the renovate Coliseum, we can open that discussion. But til then, no reason. But read between the lines people. MSG is backing this arena because the DeBlasio administration has continually threatened to end the Garden's tax breaks. If they do, the Rangers will move into and share the Islanders arena.
