Photos: Caribbean Day Carnival returns to Far Rockaway
The Caribbean Carnival in the Rockaways started with a parade that ended with a concert and festival in Bayswaters Park a half-mile away.
At the end of the parade route, the costumes helped beat the 90-plus degree heat.
It was important for the bystanders to make a serious fashion statement, too.
Masqueraders show off traditional island fashion with towering butterfly costumes.
The more unique the costume is, the better.
Cynthia Nixon, the former “Sex and the City” star challenging Gov. Cuomo in next month’s primary election, had a prominent spot on parade-sponsor state Sen. James Sanders’ (l.) float.
State Sen. James Sanders is well on his way to creating a new tradition in the Rockaways with a Caribbean Day Carnival — which includes a parade and a festival — a week or two before the big celebration in Brooklyn on Labor Day.
In its second year, the Far Rockaway Caribbean Day attracted more than 5,000 people — and a lot of feathers. Don’t take our word for it. See the photos for yourself.
