American Red Cross offers aid to those displaced as a result of Jamaica Hills fire

The American Red Cross is reaching out to anyone who needs assistance if they were temporarily displaced from their homes as a result of a fire that took place in Jamaica Hills last week.

So far, the organization has assisted three families with temporary housing and emergency funds for food and clothing, according to a spokeswoman for the organization. Anyone who was affected can reach out for support by calling (877) RED CROSS for help.

Those in need of assistance will also be provided a caseworker, according to the spokeswoman.

“We sit down with them and talk about [what] resources are out for them,” said the spokeswoman. “We are the stopgap that helps to bridge people from emergency situations to long term recovery.”

The American Red Cross will also reach out to community organizations to further aid families in getting back on their feet.

The FDNY said the fire occurred Oct. 8 in the early morning at 87-34 166 St. was on the third floor of a private house.

At 4 a.m., the fire was reported as an “all hands” alert and 12 units and 60 firefighters responded to the emergency, according to the Citizen app.

By 4:25 a.m., the fire was under control and no injuries were reported, according to the FDNY.

Fire marshals have yet to determine a cause for the fire.
