Babysitting pays off

Kohl’s, the Illinois-based department store chain, has a long history of giving back to the community – but like any good business, they demand to see some action for their help.

Realizing that unintentional and preventable injuries are the leading causes of death for children under the age of 14, throughout the year they sell special Kohl’s Cares for Kids® merchandise, with net profits benefiting children’s health and educational opportunities at 160 hospitals from coast to coast.

Among the programs Kohl’s and partner Schneider Children’s Hospital of the North Shore-LIJ Health Care System offer to young people is to increase awareness of safe babysitting practices. And it fell to Great Neck North High School’s Repertory Theatre Honors Class to show their benefactors that they got the message.

On Thursday, December 17, after a month of daily rehearsals, the kids, under the direction of their teacher Jonathan Gellert, put on an original half-hour show at the school, located at 35 Polo Road in Great Neck.

“Babysitting – The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” a comedy complete with scene changes, music and an original rap on the subject for a finale, was performed for parents, other classes and representatives from Kohl’s and Schneider.

Afterwards, the jubilant thespians crowded around as Kohl’s district manager Victor Eckert presented Dr. Arthur Klein, senior vice president of children’s services for North Shore-LIJ with a check for $329,424 to fund programs at Schneider – making their production a success even by Broadway standards.
