Jamime Palacios of Fresh Meadows pulled away from a pack of four runners after the 2-mile mark and captured the second 5K race in the College Point Road Runners Club sponsored summer series of four races in Flushing Meadows Park on Friday, July 20.
Palacios, a veteran in this summer series, covered the course in 16:49 in a field of 86 finishers.
“It’s a very good series and more runners should come out,” said Palacios, who runs unattached.
Palacios, 46, is in good shape and puts in about 70 miles a week of training. He is preparing for the Eamonn Coghlan 5K.
His best time for a 5K (3.1 mile) race is 15 minutes, coming in Forest Park.
Behind Palacios in the race last week were Alfonzo Polinia (16:57) Alvara Cruz (17:16), Al Gonzalez (17:30) and Gregorio Uraza (17:34).
Susan Yang was the women’s winner in 19:36.
Series directors Leo Nicholas and Carmen Moreno urge that more runners should compete in this series, the third of which is Friday Aug. 3, when the gun goes off at 7 p.m. sharp.
