Today’s news:

Breast cancer fight comes to Jamaica

Queens Hospital Center, an affiliate of the Queens Health Network and member of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, is hosting a free seminar on breast cancer awareness at its Jamaica campus.

Cosponsored by the Greater New York Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the “Come Learn About Breast Cancer” seminar will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Queens Hospital Center School of Nursing (“N” Building) Auditorium, at 82-68 164th St. Jamaica. Members of the Queens Hospital medical staff will present a series of lectures, followed by a question-and-answer session. Topics will include myths and truths on breast screening and treatment, an overview of breast cancer, current controversies on the value of routine mammography, and advantages of participating in research protocols to the patient. At the conclusion of the formal program there will be a tour of the new Queens Hospital Center, which officially opened its doors to the community in December. A light lunch will be served.

“Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States,” said Benjamin W. Pace, director of surgery and chief of the Breast Service at Queens Hospital Center. “One in every nine women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime — a primary reason why self-examination and a yearly mammography after 40 are essential tools in maintaining good health for today’s women. Whether you are a mother or a daughter, a wife or a sister, a grandmother or an aunt, or someone’s best friend, I encourage you to spend a few hours attending this vital conference. I guarantee you will come away empowered and enlightened — but most important, armed with valuable information that can ultimately save your life.”

The seminar is open to any member of the public interested in attending. Call 883-2129.
