OLS Rookie girls extend winning streak to three

By The TimesLedger

The Our Lady of the Snows seventh-grade girls’ softball team defeated Sacred Heart of Bayside and St. Anastasia’s to extend its winning streak to three games and improve the team’s record to 5-4 on the year.

Nicolette Viglietta made the defensive play of the game against Sacred Heart to help nail down the 6-3 win. With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the sixth inning, the Sacred Heart batter drove a fly ball deep down the right field line. Nicolette raced over and made the rally-killing catch to save the game.

Brittney Wallace helped to ignite the OLS offense with two well-placed bunts. Leading off the home third inning, Brittney beat out her bunt for a single and scored the tying run. With two runners on in the fourth inning, Brittney again beat out a bunt, helping OLS to a four-run inning and a 6-1 lead. Susan Garrett’s long double plated the final two runs in the home sixth. Nicole Bavaro, Angie Campana, Amanda Tolento, Krissy Amorese, Cathy Culp and Lauren Marino also had base hits in the game for Snows. Nicole Bavaro was robbed of a long home run on a tremendous play by the Sacred Heart centerfielder. Danielle Cervantes executed a beautiful sacrifice bunt. The OLS infield of Shannon Moran, Vanessa Zampelli, Susan Garrett and Angie Campana made several excellent defensive plays. With Sacred Heart threatening in the seventh inning, Amanda Tolento raced into the gap in center field to haul in a line drive for the game’s final out.

On Sunday at MS 67, the Snows team was looking to even the score for a mercy-rule drubbing they had suffered at the hands of St Anastasia in the first week of the season. Their 15-3 beating of St. A’s did just that. Once again, Brittney Wallace jump-started the OLS offense as she led off the game with a bunt single and used her speed to score the game’s first run. Lisa Cuiman continued to be on fire with her second consecutive 4-for-4 day at the plate. Amanda Tolento hit the ball hard and went 3-for-4.

In addition, Amanda was called on to relieve Brittney Wallace with St. Anastasia threatening to have a big inning in the home fifth and promptly closed the door on the rally. Nicole Bavaro also pounded out three hard hits. Nicolette Viglietta, Megan Brosnan, Lauren Marino, Angie Campana and Vanessa Zampelli also had base hits in the game. Briitney Wallace, Shannon Moran and Nicole Bavaro were the defensive stars of the game for OLS. Krissy Amorese picked up her third straight win as the starting pitcher.
