ELMHURST — A 2-year-old boy was struck by a van late Saturday afternoon while running across 82nd Street near Broadway, the NYPD said.
The child, Andrew Ramierez of Denman Street near 94th Street, later died at Elmhurst Hospital Center, police said.
Andrew was struck by a 2007 Chevrolet van, driven by a 39-year-old man traveling west on 82nd Street, police said. The New York Post reported Andrew had been running across the street to pick up candy left behind by illegal vendors who had been chased away from nearby Moore Homestead Park.
The boy’s sister and uncle were near the accident, and the driver picked up the boy and cried after the accident, the Post reported.
Authorities do not suspect any criminality and were continuing to investigate the matter as of press time Tuesday evening.
“He was the light of the family. It’s really hard,” Andrew’s aunt Yeimy Marrero told the Post.
