QUEENS VILLAGE — A man was fatally struck by a westbound Long Island Rail Road station near a Queens Village train stop, according to a spokesman for the MTA.
The incident occurred at about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, according to the MTA. The man, who has not yet been identified, was trespassing on the tracks when he was struck by a train from Ronkonkoma heading towards Penn Station. The spokesman said the engineers of the train heard a noise that indicated the train had struck something but did not see anything to indicate someone was on the tracks. The crew stopped the train and investigated the scene and found the body on the tracks close to the intersection of 245th Street and Superior Road.
The body was taken by Nassau County Medical Examiner, and officials have not yet determined the reason why the unidentified man was on the tracks, the MTA said.
The incident, accompanied by signal problems at the Jamaica LIRR station led the MTA to suspend service for approximately 45 minutes. Service was restored shortly after 7 p.m. and there were residual delays, according to the MTA.
