Elderly man struck and killed by motorist in Astoria

ASTORIA – An 88-year-old Astoria man was struck and killed on 23rd Avenue at 33rd Street last Friday night, according to police. Savas Maounis was crossing the street around 12:30 p.m. when he was hit by a 1999 green Ford Econoline van travelling southbound on 33rd Street.

The driver of the van made a left turn to go eastbound on 23rd Avenue when he struck the victim who was attempting to cross in the crosswalk. Officers from the 114th Precinct responded to a 911 call and discovered Maounis with trauma to the head and body.

He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead on Saturday, Nov. 19.

The driver remained at the scene and the investigation was ongoing.
