The Mets are back in the public eye once again, and not for a good reason.
Team mascot Mr. Met was caught on video flipping the bird at a fan during Wednesday night’s game at Citi Field. The video has since made its rounds in the news cycle and has gone viral on social media.
It’s unclear if anything was said to provoke Mr. Met, though if that was the case, it would not keep the man in team mascot suit out of trouble.
The incident led to an apology from the Mets, which came in the form of their official Twitter account.
“We apologize for the inappropriate action of this employee,” the team said. “We do not condone this type of behavior. We are dealing with this matter internally.”
Initial reports said the Mets had fired the employee wearing the suit, but that is not the case. The employee will keep his job with the team, but will not be the team mascot again, according to a team official.
The embarrassing incident is another blemish on a season full of them for the Mets. The team has seen Matt Harvey go AWOL and not show up at the ballpark on game day. The club also had to answer questions when a sex toy was photographed in a player’s locker in the clubhouse during a media session.
The Mets hope to put these incidents in the past as they host the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday afternoon in the final match of a four-game series.
